Digital delivery
EMI uses digital delivery as a vital way of providing its music to fans, via a burgeoning number of digital formats and business models in alliance with hundreds of digital partners across the globe.
In addition to supporting the more traditional download and subscription models, EMI Music was the first company to explore free-to-the-consumer ad-supported peer-to-peer (p2p) and mobile video services, as well as the sale of DRM-free MP3s. The company brokered a landmark deal with China’s Baidu to offer a first of its kind music subscription service in that country; with Last.fm to push the limits of social music discovery, and with YouTube/Google to give fans unprecedented access to videos and recordings from EMI Music artists including those featured in user generated content.
EMI believes that the combination of signing quality artists, delivering great music, staying laser-focused on the consumer and constant innovation should help the company grow its digital revenues from ~10% today to around 25% by 2010.
Today there are more than 300,000 tracks available for download/subscription in Europe, 150,000 in the US, and more than 100,000 in Asia. On the mobile front, EMI Music has more than 8,000 tracks available in Asia as ringtunes/ringbacks, Europe has more than 5,300, and there are more than 2,600 available in the US.
