Worldwide digital music statistics

  • Record company digital music sales are estimated to have reached around $2.9 billion in 2007, up from $2.1 billion the year before.

  • The number of legal tracks downloaded in 2007 was 1.7 billion, an increase of 53% on 2006:
     
    • Single track downloads in the US totaled 844 million, up 45% on 2006
    • In the UK, 77.6 million tracks were purchased online in 2007, a 47% increase on 2006

  • There are now over 500 online music services available in over 40 countries.

  • Portable music player sales totaled around 140 million in 2007, an increase of 15% on the previous year.

  • Broadband connections worldwide increased by 23% in 2007 to reach 350 million.

  • Mobile phone subscriptions increased 11% in 2007 to more than 2.5 billion.
