The company released the first ever digital album in 1999, and was the first label to offer a video single on the internet two years later. In April 2007 EMI Music announced the launch of new premium downloads which offer consumers music at a higher sound quality and without the restrictions of digital rights management. EMI was the first major recorded music company to do this which is a fundamental step towards removing the boundaries for consumers by enabling the interoperability of digital music between services and devices.
