The company released the first ever digital album in 1999, and was the first label to offer a video single on the internet two years later. In 2002 EMI became the first major music company to offer a song online on the same day it was released to radio.

In April 2007 EMI Music announced the launch of new premium downloads which offer consumers music at a higher sound quality and without the restrictions of digital rights management. EMI was the first major recorded music company to do this which is a fundamental step towards removing the boundaries for consumers by enabling the interoperability of digital music between services and devices. Around the world EMI Music's repertoire is now available digitally in 70 countries.
